The house of architecture

The COAC emerged as a natural evolution of the first architectural associations in Catalonia. Since its inception, it has been a pillar in the defense, training, and dissemination of architecture.

History

The origins of architects in Spain date back to master builders, figures who gradually lost prominence in favor of the architect. In Barcelona, it was the School of Architecture that nurtured the first generation of documented architects, in 1845.

In 1874, the Association of Architects of Catalonia was created, serving as the basis for the first congresses where the need for professional association to practice was debated. This achievement was reached in 1929, during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, and led to the creation of various associations throughout the country. Finally, in 1931, the current Association of Architects of Catalonia was founded.

The COAC headquarters

In 1962, under the presidency of Manuel de Solà-Morales, the COAC moved its headquarters from the Eixample district to a newly constructed building just a few meters from Barcelona Cathedral. This modern building stands out for its unique design: its 57-meter façade features sgraffito drawings by Pablo Picasso. Norwegian artist Carl Nesjar was commissioned to transfer the painter’s drawings to the large concrete panels, using the sandcasting technique.

What is the COAC?

The College of Architects of Catalonia is an institution whose mission is to defend the social value of architecture and urban planning in society, as well as to represent registered architects.

Therefore, it offers services to professional members, defends, represents, and promotes the work of architects, ensures architectural quality, and disseminates architecture in the social and cultural spheres. It currently has approximately 11,000 members who give strength and voice to the profession.

What will we visit?

We’ll visit Pablo Picasso’s murals, both on the façade and inside the building. We’ll also enjoy 360º panoramic views of Barcelona.
