Palau del Baró de Quadras

Av. Diagonal, 373 – Barcelona

A jewel of modernism

The Palau del Baró de Quadras is a building renovated by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch between 1902 and 1906 by order of Manuel de Quadras i Feliu, first baron of Quadras. The building, which already existed, had been built in 1882, with 4 floors in height, by order of the merchant Bonaventura Babot Guillermo.

History

On June 15, 1884, Josep Quadras Prim bought the house. Upon his death, the building passed into the hands of his eldest son, Manuel Quadras i Feliu, first baron of Quadras. The baron had commissioned Josep Puig i Cadafalch to rehabilitate an old castle on his property. Satisfied with the final project, he also commissioned him to renovate the building he had in Barcelona, the future Palau del Baró de Quadras.

Manuel de Quadras i Feliu (1860-1927)

Became the first baron of Quadras in 1900, a title granted by Queen Regent María Cristina, mother of Alfonso XIII. Manuel de Quadras married Joana Veiret Xipell (1862-1939), with whom he had two children: Josep and Maria de Quadras i Veiret.

Josep de Quadras i Veiret (1889-1965)

The successor to the title was his son Josep, second baron of Quadras. A lawyer by profession, he was also deputy mayor of Barcelona and married Pilar de Camps i de Casanovas, daughter of the Marquises of Camps. The daughter of the first Baron of Quadras, Maria de Quadras i Veiret, married Joan Nadal de Vilardaga.
